Keynote speakers

Professor Mansfield

Professor Mansfield

Professor Mansfield, originally from Blackpool, studied Medicine at the University of Liverpool. She trained as a surgeon across various hospitals in Liverpool, after which she specialised in vascular surgery. She became a consultant at both the Northern and Southern Hospitals. When the Royal Hospital opened, she transferred her practice there.

In 1980 she continued her career at St Mary’s Hospital and Medical School and was later appointed Professor of Surgery at Imperial College London in 1993.

Beyond her clinical and academic work, Professor Mansfield has taken on many leadership roles. She served as Vice President of the Royal College of Surgeons, led both the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland and the Vascular Society, and later became President of the British Medical Association.

She also chaired The Stroke Association and founded the Women in Surgery initiative at the Royal College of Surgeons. Now retired, she enjoys time with her six grandchildren and continues her love of music, playing the piano.

Miss Tamzin Cuming

Miss Tamzin Cuming

Miss Tamzin Cuming is a consultant colorectal surgeon, specialising in colorectal and anogenital disease, including anal cancer prevention. She leads the Homerton Anogenital Neoplasia Service, the largest dedicated service of its kind in the UK.

Tamzin is the immediate past Chair of the Women in Surgery Forum at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, where she was a national advocate for gender equity, cultural change, and safer working environments in surgery. She has spoken widely on sexism in medicine, including at the British Medical Association, and featured in a global gender-equality video with over 100 million views.

She is also an educator, researcher, and cross-disciplinary speaker, having appeared at events such as Factory – Seen and Unseen at Tate Modern. Tamzin balances her surgical career with life as a mother of three children.

In the UK, despite women comprising 59% of medical students, only 16% advance to consultant surgeon roles. WinSSA supports change through visibility, community, and structured opportunities led by students.
